We get this question all the time!

At the SMart Center, we don’t use a one-size-fits-all model or focus on just “getting a child to talk.” Instead, we use a comprehensive, evidence-based approach called Social Communication Anxiety Treatment® (S-CAT®), developed by Dr. Elisa Shipon-Blum, a pioneer in the field of Selective Mutism.

S-CAT® is not a separate or standalone treatment model. It’s a structured yet flexible whole person approach that is a blend of proven strategies (like CBT, exposure therapy, behavioral techniques, and social communication supports), organized into a personalized treatment ‘recipe’ for each child, teen, or adult. We don’t just focus on symptoms—we uncover what’s causing & maintaining the mutism (The WHYs of SM)”

🌉 We use the Social Communication Bridge® to determine a person’s baseline stage of communication—nonverbal, transitional, or verbal, and we
meet them exactly where they are. Many providers push for speech. We focus on comfort & Connection first, and communication follows. ✨

📊 We use visual tools like Feeling Charts, structured child/teen and parenting goals as well as implement evidenced-based strategies to help individuals understand what they’re feeling, why they’re feeling it, and how to manage their anxiety while building skills….and progressing socially and communicatively. This approach fosters independence and confidence.

🏡 We support and provide treatment for all social environments—including home (with family or guests), peer interactions, the community, and within the school setting. Progress happens when individuals feel supported in real-life settings—not just in an office.

👨‍👩‍👧 Caregiver and partner training is a key part of our process. Many parents, friends or partners unintentionally enable avoidance.
We help families shift their role from ‘protector’ to ‘supportive coach’—empowering the child to take healthy social risks and develop real confidence.

✨ And most of all—we don’t just help kids, teens and adults talk. We help them build comfort, connect, communicate and thrive!

After all, Courage is not always loud… 🙂

If you’ve tried other approaches that didn’t get to the root of the issue, this may be what’s been missing.
