Join the expert, Dr. Elisa Shipon-Blum, who developed the evidenced-based treatment,Social Communication Anxiety Treatment® (S-CAT®), discuss ways to help the child with Selective Mutism prepare for the upcoming school year, including the Selective Mutism Interview Game. In addition, recommendations on how to maintain progress throughout the school year to help the child with Selective Mutism speak within the school setting will be discussed.

This webinar describes Selective Mutism (SM) as a social communication anxiety disorder, its diagnostic criteria and its relation to Social Anxiety, etiology, and presenting symptoms. Also presented are sensory challenges that commonly co-occur with Selective Mutism. This webinar explains the importance of diagnosing SM early as well as why the disorder is often misdiagnosed or mismanaged. Finally, Social Communication Anxiety Treatment® (S-CAT®) is introduced and the goals of treatment are described.

Ask The Expert is a FREE Q&A web session with one of the lead counselors at the SMart Center! All are welcome, but space is limited so registration is required. This “Ask the Expert” session will focus on Summer Vacation Preparation. Although this will be the underlying focus of the session, any and all other questions are welcome as well. These sessions are catered towards the participants. Submit your questions and have them answered in real-time!
The use of medication can be a helpful component in the treatment of Selective Mutism and other anxiety disorders. Although never meant as a cure, medication can be an effective adjunct to psychotherapy, to aid in lowering anxiety, so that a child can develop long-term coping skills needed to combat anxious feelings and progress into speech.
