Description: Selective mutism (SM) is conceptualized as an anxiety disorder of social communication. This symposium will provide perspectives on evidence based interventions for SM, including integrated medical, behavioral, neuropsychological, and speech-language approaches.

This webinar describes Selective Mutism (SM) as a social communication anxiety disorder, its diagnostic criteria and its relation to Social Anxiety, etiology, and presenting symptoms. Also presented are sensory challenges that commonly co-occur with Selective Mutism. This webinar explains the importance of diagnosing SM early as well as why the disorder is often misdiagnosed or mismanaged. Finally, Social Communication Anxiety Treatment® (S-CAT®) is introduced and the goals of treatment are described.
